Seminar 2005

THE RESEARCH INFORMATION SYSTEM AND THE RESEARCH PROCESS IN A GRIDS ENVIRONMENT

Date: 19-20 September 2005
Venue: Palace of the Academies, Brussels

Management of the research process, from programme initiation to exploitable results from projects, is in crisis. This caused by two major factors:

(1) an overload of information which is not necessarily useful to the end-user and their responsibility, and
(2) difficulty in obtaining and using the relevant information in a comfortable, effective and efficient way.

The IT support systems for Research Information and the Research process are not only different from country to country and organisation to organisation, but within each environment are fragmented and not joined-up.

The result is too high a threshold barrier for comfortable use by the end-user whether a policymaker, decision-maker, project manager, researcher, evaluator, entrepreneur, innovator or media representative.

The seminar investigates the problems by delving into the processes with their information requirements and outputs. The seminar proposes that a GRIDs environment with workflow offers a solution.
