About euroCRIS
Background: Research output controls the way we live. Engineering advances provide machines and appliances to make our lives easier, biomedical advances improve life expectancy, and improve food production and quality, cultural advances improve the quality of life and scientific advances answer the big philosophical questions and lead to other advances.
EU countries currently spend ~ 2% of their GDP (Gross Domestic Product) on R&D of which ~ 50% is financed by business; the aim is to increase that to 3% by 2010 with > 60% financed by business. High technology industries (based on research) typically account for ~ 20% of the exports of a country. There is a clear link from research to wealth creation and improvement in the quality of life.
Improved prosperity and quality of life is predicated upon research advances and education as indicated in, for example, the EC Lisbon Agenda. To achieve these goals, availability of research information is essential for the entrepreneur, businessman, politician, research funder, researcher and equally for the media and 'man in the street'.
Identity and Mission: euroCRIS is a not-for-profit association and aims to be the internationally recognised point of reference for all matters relating to Current Research Information Systems (CRIS). The association owns a trademark and registered Internet presence (www.eurocris.org) which also provides the official contact information. The association unites experts in the field of CRIS and through its strategic partnerships also all major stakeholders in the European research community, and brings its members biannual meetings, workshops, an annual seminar and every two years a conference, as well as online discussion forums with peers and publications.
euroCRIS is dedicated to improvement of research information availability. The association is custodian of the Common European Research Information Format (CERIF), an international standard for interoperation of CRIS, which is an EU recommendation to the member states. euroCRIS stimulates the implementation of CERIF-compliant CRIS. Ultimate aim is to implement all relevant CRIS (related) systems progressively on a GRIDs platform in order to gain maximum advantage for European research at all levels.
In the realisation of this mission euroCRIS capitalises on international developments in science and science policy, particularly with reference to the European Research Area (ERA) and the evolving needs of stakeholders.
Areas of interest:
- Research databases, thematic and according to type of information (expertise, projects, institutions, facilities and products - including publications)
- CRIS related data: scientific datasets, (Open Access) institutional repositories, knowledge-assisted data collection systems and process-based workflow systems
- Maintenance and dissemination of CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) to accommodate implementation and interoperability of CRIS (related) systems
- Data access and exchange mechanisms, standards and guidelines and best practice for CRIS
